Old Bexleians' AssociationMessage Board Welcome to the OBA message board. Please feel free to make your comments below: Messages Added on 20/10/2011 21:39:38 by:Glen Stevens CV reads "studied pretentiousness at BGS and passed with flying colours" and its Mr Critton and Mr Collins to you. Added on 25/09/2011 22:44:03 by: S I think all the reports from that time were binned. I may be wrong, but I got mine from around then (a few years later) and believe I was told I needed to be quick about it. Added on 24/09/2011 17:05:59 by: Glen Stevens To whom it may concern. During my five years at BGS, despite having spent the majority of my time 'fannying about', I did absorb from my largely middle class mentors a sense of reason and objectivity and, whilst I believe that the principle of freedom of expression might reasonably be challenged when employed as a jusification for the use of offensive language, or the genuine advocation of physical harm towards others, it is, is it not, contrary to the positive advancement of humanity to maintain a system whereby actuality is concealed. Added on 24/09/2011 17:05:44 by: Glen Stevens Ah I see. I've just seen post submission message. Added on 24/09/2011 16:03:23 by: Glen Stevens Collins and Critton. Aside from having your update censored Collins, what evidence do you gentlemen have that your input is being censored? Added on 05/09/2011 17:37:35 by: Lance Howdy. Is it possible to get copies of my old school reports? I started in 1988 so it is unlikely... Added on 04/08/2011 12:04:41 by: Martin Carey Perhaps David was referring to me. I lived in WA from 1972 until 2008. I met David with other OBs from OBFC in Chiselhurst in 2004 after contributing to the newsletter in 1999. I had been principal of Herne Hill PS in the Swan Valley at that time. I retired in 2007 as principal of Yokine PS in Perth. Trish and I moved to Melbourne for a change of scenery and to be closer to our children. I visit WA to catch up with friends and relatives every year. I hope this helps. Added on 28/07/2011 01:04:15 by: Peter Rutherford In reply to Barney's asking if I am that teacher - sorry I'm not. I am a Principal Policy Officer with the Department of Health, specialising in the regulation and controls over the use of pesticides etc. In reply to Colin Ellis assertion that Im in contact with Ric Naish - sorry, but I'm not. I would also like to contact him if anyone knows his wherabouts. Added on 22/07/2011 04:04:40 by: Barney Jones Very delayed response to Peter Rutherford's message from a year ago. I live in WA (Applecross). David Jones mentioned there was a teacher in WA (in Swanleigh from memory), is that you? Added on 27/06/2011 12:14:11 by: Colin Ellis Is anyone in contact with Keith Cutting - would like to hear from him. Added on 27/06/2011 12:12:28 by: Colin Ellis Hi Mrs Peros, Have you noticed that Peter Rutherford says he is in touch with Ricky Naish? Cheers, Colin Ellis Added on 18/06/2011 22:34:45 by: Valerie Farrant I am looking for my cousin who was born Valerie Farrant who I met last after she married and lived in Higham. Barbara Dossetter. Added on 08/06/2011 00:12:24 by: James There was a Mathematics teacher in the 80's called Mr Bridges, with initials PTB. Does anyone know where he is these days ? Added on 29/05/2011 06:14:46 by: Disappointed. Can someone AT LEAST explain WHY the board is censored ? There maybe a good reason .. but it would be good to know what it it. Most likely this won't get posted. Added on 26/05/2011 20:45:00 by: Ian Collins I even had my personal update censored ! Added on 25/05/2011 08:02:49 by: Colin Ellis Hi Peter Rutherford, Were you at BGS 1956 onward? If so let me know as I'm visiting WA from SA for the Hopman Cup and we might be able to catch up. PS I'm not a right wing plumber - just a lapsed agnostic. Added on 25/05/2011 07:58:36 by: Colin Ellis Hi there all my fans, Recently changed e-mail address. If anyone would like to contact me would be pleased to hear from them- I was underwhelmed by the last response. I'm sad when I reflect that I made so much effort to get rid of my halitosis and bad breath only to find out that people didn't like me anyway! Added on 16/04/2011 11:52:04 by: Peter Critton As several "posters" have mentioned there is a lack of input on the message board, the old message board did have greater activity. What are the site moderators worried about? They want to make sure that only comments which show the school in a positive light make the way on to the board...this is censorship at its worst, we all went to the same school and those who had a bad experience should be able to share that in equal measure to those who wish to tell of the good experiences. If an open board shows a marked propensity towards people sharing of the not so good times spent at BGS then it is only right and proper this be shown to be the case...whatever we have all done since leaving BGS we all went in having proven by the system in place at the time of deserving a place at that institution, and by the same measure all our opinions should be published now.......or CLOSE THE BOARD AND STOP THE CENSORSHIP Added on 26/03/2011 17:38:09 by: Gill Trott Received my report today. Brings back a lot of memories, It shows how sometimes the teachers knew me better than I knew myself and the other extreme that no matter what you did or said, it never seemed enough! Also I can see some of my traits 'shining thru' from an early age! Added on 13/03/2011 23:00:23 by: What ever happened to Clive Flewin (84-91)? Last I heard he went to Oxford to read Physics and stayed there for his doctorate. Added on 11/03/2011 23:10:10 by: Ian Collins It appears I'm not allowed to reply to you due to this sites censorship. Oh well. Added on 04/02/2011 14:47:31 by: Pete Howard Hi Ian; hope you are well. Re-reading my last post I'm aware that it comes across as somewhat mean spirited and given that the subject is no longer around to defend himself, probably seems a little unfair as well. I suppose if you close your eyes and squint a bit you could probably make yourself see that far from being an unkind comment (made to someone for whom it must have been obvious to everyone else in the room at the time that their young life was falling apart), that this was a masterful act of perspicacity, motivated only by the desire to do good. But it wasn't. So bollocks. I think what motivates us, on the end, has to come from within and it's how we respond to criticism and failure that defines us as people. Some people thrive on adversity, sometimes to a ridiculous degree, while others collapse, never to really recover. If I'd have been a different person then I may well have responded in a very different way, but then I may not have allowed myself to get in that position in the first place. Added on 02/01/2011 14:03:00 by: Julie Bishop (Youell) 1970-1975 Brought back some memories reading "Districts" comments. I certainly remember Mr Moore. Who could forget his "n'est pas" accompanied by much saliva....probably why it was always a race to get a seat near the back. Alas he always made sure I was near the front so that I was paying attention. Also remember being made to write sides of french for various misdemeanours and being so convinced that he never read them that I wrote "framboises (raspberries)" all the way through by way of rebellion....and yes, it seems he never read it as there was no come-back. He must have been a fantastic teacher as I amazed both myself and my husband on a driving holiday through France by being not only able to understand the lingo but also able to speak it and be understood!!!!OMG Sorry to hear he is no longer with us. Added on 22/12/2010 15:52:43 by: I'm not a left wing plumber (sic) or anything similar, but I am in agreement with Peter Critton (message of 26/10/2010) Added on 16/12/2010 22:26:28 by: Ian Collins I think you'll find Jim Moore was your spur so what he said to you worked. Added on 09/12/2010 02:49:02 by: Peter Howard (District) Bit quiet on here, what? Here's a funny story. My old cohorts from 1970 to 1975 may remember that I struggled academically. Me and John Bartley came up to the school to collect our O level results. I got two passes at grade C. The rest were unclassified. I remember being on the brink of tears and asking if I could do my A levels anyway. Jim Moore (the French teacher) helpfully suggested that I ought to go back and do my Eleven Plus again. (Twat. Nowadays I could probably sue him for that, or something.) In 1982 I graduated with a 2:1 in International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis. Shortly after the awards ceremony I went back to BGS with the intention of showing him my diploma. Imagine my surprise when I discovered he had died only a few months previously. Apart from being sorry for the poor chap and all that, it was only the thought of presenting him with proof that he had been wrong about me that had kept me going, when I had felt (frequently)like giving up. I was, to borrow from others on this board, miffed. Curiously enough, I bumped into Ron Sawyer sometime in the mid 80s in a pub somewhere, and told him this story. Ron said that Jim had probably and inadvertently told me what I needed to hear. I nearly bashed him as well. Moral: Don't get mad. Revenge is a dish best eaten cold. I feel better for that. Can I have a job there, please? Added on 26/10/2010 13:20:13 by: Peter Critton Well........fancy seeing a return of the message board....the last time the board was live it became somewhat lively........but as its all moderated now no doubt the only postings allowed through will be from people saying "what a super time they had there, and now I am a doctor/lawyer/etc thanks to BGS and by the way I vote Tory" probably not much room for left wing plumbers I imagine. Added on 15/07/2010 03:19:17 by: Peter Rutherford Are there any other OBs living in Western Australia? Added on 14/07/2010 18:41:01 by: cd If Andy Green (1973-1980) ever reads this, would he please respond. Taralott Added on 29/06/2010 04:26:24 by: Firripsz Some kind soul has reminded me that September 2010 makes 40 years since we started in BGS. I am soooo depressed, I haven't slept since May! Added on 29/06/2010 04:24:33 by: Firripsz If the anonymous contributor of 30/04 would like to reveal him/herself I will attempt to decide whether a certain amount of miffness(is this a word??) is justified. Added on 19/06/2010 00:31:20 by: liz dodds does anyone know what became of sandra peirse 58-65 and david madell 59 -66? Added on 30/04/2010 18:40:35 by: I was a member of Prothero house in the 1970s and am therefore unsure whether or not to be miffed by Firripsz' message of 9th April... Added on 09/04/2010 10:47:00 by: Firripsz I should like to thank the person(s) responsible for deciding that points awarded 4 academic achievement would not be added to House points from 1970 onwards, otherwise I'm sure that Prothero would have come last every year from 1970-76! Added on 09/04/2010 10:10:27 by: Firripsz Whoever nicked my big, shiny cap badge on my 1st day, give it back! My cap has a big hole in it where the badge was! Added on 08/04/2010 06:23:53 by: Barry Hassell 1961 intake & 1966 escapee Visiting UK again in Oct 2010 Wife wants to see more of England and, believe it or not, Paris e-mail bazhaz@yahoo.com Added on 23/03/2010 08:09:04 by: jacqui snelling Could Ann Lincoln who recently submitted an update for her details please emaiil me at school SNELLING_J@bexleygs.co.uk as I need an email address for your entry. Thanks Jacqui Added on 17/03/2010 13:56:24 by: Michele Young nee Hall I see my picture in a class photo for 1959 with question marks, and can indeed confirm that is me. I would be very interested in locating Elizabeth Lyons who is in the same picture. Best wishes and thanks for the newsletter. Always nice to walk down memory lane. Added on 10/03/2010 07:30:24 by: Peter Rutherford Does anyone know what became of Fred Silchenstedt - 1956-63? We were best mates at school, but when we left school in 1963, I emigrated to Western Australia, and I think Fred joined Morphy Richards as a trainee saleman. Added on 04/03/2010 22:55:31 by: OBA Hello and welcome to the new OBA website.which I hope will allow people to 'chat', to ask and answer questions and to generally keep up with what's going on at Bexley Grammar - and what went on there in the past. |
